If you’re reading this page then it’s likely you have an idea about what I mean by SEO but may have need of an SEO Guide. When you perform SEO on a web page, you have to decide which phrase or search words you are targeting, which market you’re targeting if you like. This process is called keyword research. It’s probably best explained by some examples. Let’s pick an example, perhaps you have a small hotel near Yellowstone National Park and you’ve set up a web site to bring in customers. Great, but nobody ever does visit because you’re relying on people just finding your web site. You need to engage with the search engines to try and bring customers to your site.
So lets look at the first stage, keyword research – it simply means finding the best search queries that your web site will appear in. Let’s have a look at some possibilities here –

would probably be a good target. The searchers are specifically looking for a hotel in the west side of Yellowstone, the terms gets a lot of traffic and represents a high chance of bringing in customers.
This is why keyword research is so essential, and is the essence of SEO marketing especially if your web site is designed to make money and bring in customers.
There is more to keyword research like looking at combinations, the competition and other factors but this illustrates the point and hopefully the possibilities. If the owner of our West Yellowstone Hotel could bring in hundreds of people a day to his website who have typed in ‘west yellowstone hotels’ – I think we can all see the potential.
This is how we use the web effectively, we identify a target and then tailor our SEO and marketing efforts toward this goal. SEO Target Marketing opens up a huge potential that you can exploit just from sitting there at home, you need little – an internet connection and a computer and a drive to succeed.
So if we’ve identified our keywords, we need to use SEO techniques to bring that traffic to our website. It can be a big subject but there are some very simple basic tasks that you must do to bring such targeted traffic to your website.
On Page SEO
- Title Tags – The Title of your Web page must contain the keywords you are targeting. So in our example we must use the phrase – West Yellowstone Hotels somewhere in our Title tag.
- H1 Tag – This is a header tag which we use for headings in our web site – the search engines look for this as an indicator about the topic of the page. We must also use the phrase ‘West Yellowstone Hotels somewhere in a heading on our page.
- Keyword Density – You should make sure that the phrase ‘West Yellowstone Hotels is used occasionally in our web page. Don’t overdo it though.
- Name in Domain or URL – this isn’t always possible but if it is – having the phrase in the domain name or name of the page helps to rank for that phrase.
There are a few more factors but these are by far the most important, and most websites don’t do these so you’d be ahead of most of the competition. You’ve picked your keyword, made some slight SEO modifications and are now actively targeting potential customers. It’s what Google wanted and they’ve pretty much obtained it, at least in my experience. The huge number of automation tools seem to be fairly worthless now, sure you’ll often get a bit of a spike from a SeNuke blast or a few thousand social bookmarks but it doesn’t seem to last and the effects can end up being negative in the long run. That wonderful feeling when your traffic falls off a cliff is the likely end result.
Many of these tools come at quite a significant cost, they’ve also been invested very heavily in – so don’t expect the disciples and affiliates to stop promoting them yet. You’ll still hear tales of great success and wonderful wealth but please take all this with a pinch of salt. One simple test is to start looking at your competitors to see what’s effective.
Let’s Use Market Samurai to have a look at a niche I used to do very well in – casinos and roulette.
Here’s the analysis of the top ten for a competitive term in that niche – one that I know makes serious money (click to enlarge if you want to see the data more clearly).
Now I’ve censored the results a bit as I don’t want to start naming web sites but trust me this is a competitive keyword. But just look at the top spot for this keyword it’s topped by a new domain (DA – domain age) with just a couple of hundred links (the BLP figure – back links to page) from about a hundred different domains (the RDD – referring domains).
This simply wouldn’t have happened twelve months ago – you needed a serious number of links to stand a hope of getting on that page. What this site has done is go for quality, it’s still very definitely targeted this spot but using the new SEO rules rather than the old one. There simply aren’t thousands of links from web directories or article sites, but just a few links from powerful sites – a DMOZ link, some EDU links and a few related niche links. No Link wheels, no blog comments, no ten thousand gibberish Wiki links either.
Automation tools simply weren’t used to push this site to a serious money spinning position in a difficult niche. Have a look at your own niche, look for new sites that have just reached high positions – see what they are doing. Let’s look a little closer at some of the anchors that have been chosen to link to this site –
You can check out your competitors links and anchor text using the new analysis function in Market Samurai, it’s incredibly useful. A majority of the anchors are the site name, lots of blanks ones and mixed up text – very few specifically targeted although in my experience this site should probably diversify these even more. But the point is that in the old World of SEO – pre-Panda and Penguin, you would have needed tens of thousands of exact anchor text links to succeed in this niche – this site doesn’t have these.
You are still going to need links to rank, try and create great content on a new website and see how far it gets you without doing anything else. The key is that it’s quality not content that counts now, the automation tools never delivered this and I fear their time is gone.
If you’ve been hit by Panda or Penguin you’ll certainly know about it. I don’t know anyone in internet marketing who hasn’t been hit to some extent. However slowly the mist is fading and the reality of how to repair the damage is becoming clearer.
Unfortunately for anyone who has a successful site which has been actively promoted over the years it’s probably going to take a while to fix. For years many of us have been building links to our websites with a targeted anchor text. We did it because it worked, brought us traffic and customers however Google never did like it and classed it as gaming the system.
So all these web sites which ranked due to large number of links with specific anchor text have been penalised. There’s been a lot of debate on the relative percentages but the consensus seems to be as follows –
- 30% of targeted keywords (e.g make money online)
- 40% of branded links (e.g. just plain url like www.googlefix.com)
- 30% of Untargeted keyword (e.g click here, visit here, try this site)
There’s no doubt that the dangerous one is targeted keywords – to be honest I’d keep the percentages lower than that and always vary them. If you have an important links use your keywords in them and vary all the others.
The other thing that is important is that there seems to be some level of links where the Penguin changes kick off. So if you have a newer site it may seem to be ok but the filter might hit you at any point. Check the percentages of your links you can use services like SEOMoz or Market Samurai now has a anchor text analysis module built in too.
The ratio seems to operate on a per domain basis – for example if you have 1000 links from one site with duplicate anchor text then only one will count for the assessment.
Check those Links !!!
If you are affected then start building ordinary links to fix your ratios. You can rescue sites that have been affected however it obviously can be hard work. This site itself was previously affected due to over optimization of the anchor text – “SEO marketing”, currently it’s back to page one for that term after being kicked out of top 100.
